Area: Skill Development
Aarti, a 22-year-old resident of Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, has faced significant challenges throughout her life. Coming from a family of eight, with her father as the sole breadwinner, she experienced financial hardships that shaped her aspirations and decisions. Despite completing her education up to the 12th grade, Aarti recognized the limitations of her formal schooling and sought to enhance her skills for better economic opportunities.
Growing up in a large family, Aarti felt the weight of responsibility early on. With limited resources at home, pursuing further education was not feasible without jeopardizing her siblings’ educational prospects. This dilemma led her to make the difficult decision to discontinue her studies and marry. Aarti had always harbored an interest in sewing, and she understood that honing this skill could provide her with a means of income.
In 2021, after her marriage, Aarti relocated to Surajpur in Noida, where she learned about Project Unnati. This initiative offered comprehensive training beyond basic sewing skills, which piqued her interest. Encouraged by her husband, Aarti enrolled in the program, which provided extensive training as a Sewing Machine Operator (SMO). The program lasted 45 days with daily sessions of eight hours each, allowing Aarti to acquire essential skills in garment making, including techniques for creating collars and cuffs.
The training not only equipped her with professional skills but also instilled a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. Aarti’s trainers were adept and supportive, helping her develop confidence in her abilities.
Following the completion of her training, Aarti participated in a month-long on-the-job training at Orient Fashion Exports under Project Unnati in 2022. During this period, she took on a significant role in supporting her household while her husband was unemployed. The placement opportunities provided by the project were instrumental not only for Aarti but also for many of her peers.
Her hard work paid off; she saved a substantial amount that allowed her to assist her family financially and even purchase a plot of land. This achievement marked a pivotal moment in Aarti’s life, as it enabled her to contribute meaningfully to her family’s welfare.
Today, Aarti continues to sew clothes not only for others but also for herself and her eight-month-old child. Her journey through Project Unnati has transformed her life, providing both professional growth and financial stability for her family. She expresses immense gratitude towards Acuity Knowledge Partners and Roots Foundation for creating such empowering opportunities for individuals like herself.
Aarti’s story exemplifies how targeted vocational training can profoundly impact lives by fostering self-reliance and economic independence. Through determination and support from initiatives like Project Unnati, she has emerged as a role model for others in similar circumstances.
